A Hand Up, Not a Handout: How Your Support Empowers Military Families

By Ensley Howell | The Rinaldi Project

Starting the Year with Purpose

As we step into a new year, many of us look for ways to serve others, reset our values, and give with greater intention. January is also home to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national day of service that reminds us:

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

At The Rinaldi Project, our mission is unequivocal: we provide veterans and military families with opportunities, not charity. Our approach is not to offer handouts, but rather to empower them with the means to achieve their goals.

At The Rinaldi Project, our mission is clear: we are not providing charity to veterans and military families; instead, we are offering them an opportunity—not a handout, but a hand up.

The Difference Between Giving and Empowering

When a family receives a one-time check, their stress may fade temporarily—but the struggle often remains.

But when they go through our 5-phase journey, they gain:

  • A career path, not just a paycheck

  • Tools for emotional resilience, not just short-term counseling

  • Long-term mentorship and financial independence

  • A renewed sense of purpose and contribution

This is the kind of support that changes lives from the inside out.

Meet the Daniels Family

James, a U.S. Army veteran, and his wife Tanya were living paycheck to paycheck after transitioning to civilian life. Through your support, they received:

  • Career certification and job placement support

  • Spouse coaching and mental health care

  • Emergency rent assistance after a relocation delay

  • Peer mentorship and alumni check-ins

Now both are working full-time, their daughter is thriving in school, and they’re mentoring another veteran couple through the Rinaldi network.

“This wasn’t a gift. It was an investment in our future.”

Why January Support Matters

Many families come to us after the holidays—facing layoffs, PCS moves, or the emotional aftershocks of the season. It’s one of our busiest intake periods of the year.

Your donation this month can be the first step in someone’s 2025 transformation.

This MLK Day, Let’s Serve with Impact

The Rinaldi Project is built on empowerment, dignity, and transformation. By giving today, you help us continue that mission into the new year.

You don’t need a cape or a title. You just need to care—and take action.
