Meet a Graduate: James’ Story from Service to Cybersecurity

By The Rinaldi Project Team

From the Flightline to the Firewall

James M. didn’t think much about life after the military. After eight years in the Air Force as an aircraft maintenance technician, his identity was rooted in routine, responsibility, and readiness.

But when his enlistment ended, civilian life hit harder than expected.

“I didn’t know where I fit anymore,” James said. “I knew I had skills. I just didn’t know how to tell that story in the civilian world. I was used to serving, not selling myself.”

Starting From Uncertainty

James reached out to The Rinaldi Project after being referred by a fellow veteran. He was skeptical—“I’ve seen a lot of programs that promise the world but disappear after a few weeks,” he said.

What he found instead was structure. Community. And a path forward.

Phase by Phase: A Veteran’s Journey

Phase 1: Outreach & Onboarding

After his intake assessment, James was matched with a case manager who helped map out a tailored plan—focusing on his interest in tech and his experience with mission-critical systems.

Phase 2: Career & Education

James participated in three one-on-one coaching sessions, revamped his resume and LinkedIn profile, and enrolled in a CompTIA Security+ certification course funded by the program.

“I always liked systems, but I didn’t think cybersecurity was realistic until someone invested in me.”

Phase 3: Mental Health & Family Wellness

Through The Rinaldi Project, James accessed six free therapy sessions focused on anxiety, transition stress, and rebuilding confidence.

His wife, Maria, joined a virtual spouse support group and received financial wellness coaching.

“We were both adjusting to a new reality,” she said. “This program didn’t just support James—it supported our whole family.”

Phase 4: Community & Leadership

James volunteered at a local youth tech bootcamp and attended two veteran networking mixers.

“I realized I could be a leader outside the military too. That was huge for me.”

Phase 5: Long-Term Mentorship

Today, James is employed full-time at a cybersecurity firm in San Diego and mentors two newer Rinaldi Project participants.

Measurable Impact

  • Secured CompTIA Security+ certification

  • Employed in a civilian tech role within 3 months

  • Increased family income stability by 40%

  • Maintains ongoing mentorship role in veteran network

James’ Advice to Other Veterans

“You served. You adapted. You thrived in the hardest conditions. Civilian life is just a different battlefield. The Rinaldi Project gives you the tools to win—on your own terms.”
